There are definetly different sizes and shades of olive with the BWO’s in this river. Today, they were size 24 and dark olive. The hatch lasted about 2 hours.  And the dry flyfishing was good. The bugs were so little and numerous that I fished a size 17 Sulphur comparadun.  Go figure… the fish ate it. And ate it well. Not the little ones either.  But the quality ones.

So I guess there is a hint there as to what to do. I hope I remember it myself.

Caught the water as it was going down from generation today.  Got the tail end of  a Blue Winged Olive Hatch.  Fish were sipping duns pretty well. These BWO’s were size 20-21. Got away with a size 20 BWO Thorax dy fly.

Caught four fish 16+” inches on the dry. The fish right now are “Hot”.  Had 6X flourocarbon on and was glad to have it on. These fish were so on fire, I could not have landed them on 7X . Am convinced of that today. The browns have fattened up since spawning and are on  fire. You know within seconds they are browns. For they begin the head shaking quickly.  The rainbows are true Holston Rockets right now. They are acrobatic tigers.

Had about 2 hours of dry fly fishing. Then the fish went to midges. Finished up with a Loop wing midge dropped below a dry. Caught several on it before quitting for the day.

There is nothing like dry fly fishing , is there?

Well after working in the morning me and Dave finally got out of the shop around 2pm. TVA ran water in the morning so we headed down stream to get away from some of the fisherman. The water was down when we got to the river and I caught several smaller fish right after I got in the water. Dave moved upstream of me and I saw him catching a few fish. I stopped getting hits so I moved up towards Dave and hooked into a really nice Brown after a good fight I landed the 16-17″ Brown. We fished a little while longer, but the fish never really cut on so we decided to change sections.

At our second spot we go into the water, and didnt get into fish right away. Then the fish started feeding. We caught fish till it got dark. It was a great afternoon of fishing with Dave.

Both the South Holston and Watauga have been fishing good this month.

Me and Dave Miller got out to do some fishing on Sunday.  It was a beautiful day, and by the time I got out of the shop it was warm an sunny. Me and Dave headed down river to try and catch the water dropping. We got down to the water and it was still up a little bit, but had a great flow. As soon as we got in the water we started catching fish. There at one time I caught 12 fish on 12 cast. I hooked one really nice Brown in that hole, but it pulled off. As we worked our way upstream Dave got into the action and both of us were catching fish one after another. It was a great day of fishing and I really enjoyed fishing with Dave.
