Drift Boat fishing has contiuned to be good. Not much bug activivty on high water. But excellent nymph fishing. The enclosed picture came from Matthew Guinn’s boat on Monday.
The low water fishing has been BWO’s and Sulphurs- Both dry and nymphs. And always midge pupae and black fly larvae.

On yesterday December 19, the Drift Boat Fishing was good. Matt said his clients caught about 30 fish in the morning on the float. Bugs were lacking but the nymph bite was good here on the South Holston River. The biggest fish yesterday was a Rainbow trout about 18″. The low water bite was slow. Matt said he was afraid that would happen when there were no bugs on the water as the generated water went down. His client hooked a Brown of about 22″s. He got it right to him and the fish flopped and buzzed out of there and broke 3X.. 3X mind you. That is what big fish do.

Last week TVA ran til around 12:00 – lunch time- each day last week on the South Holston River. The high water fishing was very good, Saturday, Matt had Mike Hagan from Mass. on Saturday for a 1/2 a day float trip. In that 4 hours, Mike caught 26 trout. Matt said almost all the fish we 12- 14 inches. I think he caught several very nice fish, also. I know on Friday , he caught a 18 1/2″ Rainbow. I just talked with Matt a few minutes ago and Gary Newton from Ohio just caught a 18″ Rainbow. That seems to be the theme. At least one big bow a trip. Come to think of it, Bob Klier caught a 21″ Brown on Friday with Matt on a float trip. Bottom line is , good fish are being caught.
TVA is projecting running a good bit for the next few days. But we will know more tomorrow about the rest of the week.

TVA is burping every 12 hours now.. with no generation in between. At least for the moment. So the low water fishing should be good. Matt has been catching good fish on small nymphs. And as you see , so has Matthew Guinn.
Weather is going to be good and warm this later week and weekeknd.

On South Holston River. Strange fishing on Saturday. I fished as the water was dropping from generation Saturday. No bugs at all where I was. But the deep nymph fishing was good. I was fishing with a Demo Echo rod. It is a 10’6″-3 wt. I fished it Friday afternoon and Saturday. I have been wanting a high sticking rod for both nymphs and dry dropper fishing. I found it. The idea for me was a rod to keep as much line off the water as possible to control drag well. And to stay in contact more directly with the fly. This rod accomplished all that. But I did not expect it to cast a country mile with no effort. With a 4 weight line , it would gun cast into the wind. It was shocking how powerful that rod is. Fishing double nymph rigs for 6 hours, I did not get one tangle. That is unheard of. The Rajeff men have figured something out and I like it. Friday, the first fish I caught was a solid 16″ male brown. He was colored up. And on that rod fought like crazy. But he was handled with no problems. Fish feel so good on this rod. But the butt section has so much power.. no problems with handling fish.. at all.
As the water is dropping out from generation , do not forget to fish the banks in front on you,. Work your way out . There are plenty of fish on the banks. It seemed to me both days, that the bigger browns were on the edges. And I was not fishing any of the spawning areas. . I was fishing sand and grass areas.
The rig for me was a size 16 nymph and a #20 nymph . Caught fish on both flies. I would say most of my fish came on the bigger nymph.
The fish are big, fat and beautiful, now. Please watch handling the female browns, they are full of eggs. It will not be long before that lay those eggs. So be careful , please.

Matt’s clients hammered fish today. They caught fish very well while floating.. tagging into a real hawg , Matt said. The hog pulled out.
Then on low water , very good fish were caught by all.

On high water float trips, the South Holston River, has fished good. Then as the water dropped, the river continued to fish good. But once it was dropped out, boy did things get tough. Midges, my goodness.
With the water dropping there still have been sulphurs and BWO’s.
As soon as TVA gets to a normal winter schedule, the fishing will pick back up. You can still catch fish, you just have to work for them.

Sulphurs have come off in good numbers the last 3 days. TVA has been running water til around noon. As the water drops , the sulphurs have been doing their thing here on the South Holston River.
Plenty of BWO’s also in spots. Size 22 and 24′s are the ticket. All winter the average size of th BWO’s are 22′s.
On high water, nymph fishing has been pretty good. Then as the water begins to drop, things go crazy. Dry, dropper heaven.
Kevin Lowe and Matthew Guinn swear by the 6.5X Trout Hunter Flourocarbon Tippet material. If they are getting away with it on guide trips, that says a lot. I love the Trout Hunter 6.5X Mono tippet material. Nice and supple and strong.
Big fish are moving.

BWO’s nymphs. Some had good Sulphur hatches, still. According to Matthew G. and my guides, BWO nymphs and midge pupae were the ticket. Those in good sulphur hatches caught fish on small sulphur dries. One of Kevin Lowe’s clients caught a 21″ brown on a midge pupae.
TVA seems to be giving a good wade schedule for the week again. A.M. generation, then cutting it off til late.

Last week was still pretty stout on Sulphurs here on the South Holston River. The day it rained all day, the sulphurs poured off. And the best part , fish were easy to catch. As you well know, thtat is not always the case. And Saturday proved that. Plenty of bugs, wind and refusals. My best success Sat. was a #20 BWO compardun. Then a #20 Sulphur comparadun. I sure had my share of big fish refusals. On thses fish, if they did not eat on the first float, they did not eat at all for me. Why some days they eat your fly good and others they don’t, I have no clue.
Looks like a good wade week for you guys. If you know how to jump around on the river, you could have fished all day, the last two days.
Two sections are closed as of November 1 for spawning browns. They are: From 44 bridge up to above Riversway[ Bottom Creek actually- 2 miles or so] Then form the bottom of the island below Weaver pike Bridge to severall 100 yards above Webb Bridge- a mile of so} Those two sections will be closed til Feb. 1 , That still leaves 12 or so miles of river open 12 months a year. Please remember the brown trout will be spawning soon. So please take care of them.

I floated my little Lavro Drift boat yesterday. I love that little boat. Anyway, the Sulphurs Hatch was very good yesterday here on the South Holston River. Not a huge hatch, but trout were out eating them all over the river. Fish were out in the river eating in places I have not seen them in a while. You could catch fish good on sulphur dries yesterday.
